Back in September, Jason & I took a trip up to Bath. For my American friends, Bath is in Somerset (South West of the UK). Jason and I decided to have a long weekend away (child-free shock!) and explore somewhere neither of us have been before. Full of fields, stunning country homes, charm, history & architecture, Bath is full of everything that both of us love!
We booked a cute little Airbnb which was a small cottage on a private Estate; situated a mere 30 minutes from the centre of Bath. One of my favourite things about the UK is that you can be a stones’ throw away from city life, yet be in the middle of the countryside and are having to drive 10 minutes down the road just for milk. Some may not like this style of life, but us..? We adore it.
The weather was amazing which we had not anticipated so that was a lovely surprise. We spent the first few days exploring the surrounding areas, walking through fields to the local farm shops and pubs, before settling back into our little cottage to enjoy the summer evenings.
Nestled in the bustling Bath City, is a little bookstore. There are a few gems for the budding book lover in Bath, and one thing to note is if you aren’t sure of what you’re looking for, there is a chance you’ll walk straight past them! So I would make sure you’ve made note of the surrounding shops and street names before setting off to find them. Tucked away down John Street is Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights. I’ve heard a lot about Mr B’s from my work colleagues as well as searching for book-related gift ideas. I immediately added Mr B’s to my list of places to explore and it absolutely did not disappoint.
Described as a labyrinthe, there are lots of little spaces and around every corner is a wall covered in books. I’m loving the trend in bookstores with staff member recommendations and shelves dedicated to books specifically chosen by the team. These insights are across each genre, with a small reading corner for children and an entire floor dedicated to non-fiction. It was adorable and I would absolutely suggest next time you’re in Bath, add Mr B’s to your list of places to visit!
“Within these walls, books reign supreme.”– Mr B’s Emporium of reading delights
For my 30th birthday, my work colleagues surprised me with a 6 month reading subscription. I won’t lie, I squealed with delight when I opened the envelope and couldn’t wait to get home to start the questionnaire process. The team have curated a very in-depth questionnaire which works out your likes, dislikes, auto-buy authors and authors you’d love to read or have not yet heard of. Once completed, the team reviews your answers and then personally selects a book for your first subscription.
I received an email a week before my first book was to arrive to make sure that I was happy with the choice. Don’t fret though! The team are clever and don’t give away the book title but do give you the author’s name. All of this to make sure it’s not a book you have read before. Once confirmed that you’re happy with your choice, sit back and wait for your book mail!
My first subscription arrived and as you can see, the packaging is gorgeous. From the exterior blue card, to the beautiful paper wrapped around the book and sealed with a gold ‘B’, it really is sublime.
My first read is Shelley Parker-Chan, She Who Became the Sun. Described as a tale of love, loss, betrayal and triumph, She Who Became the Sun reimagines the rise to power of the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty. Shortlisted for the British Book Awards 2022 (Debut Book of the Year), I know I am in for a real treat. This novel, with its fiery orange cover, is currently taking pride of place on my bedside table in anticipation for me to finish my current read. I cannot wait to share my thoughts on this once I get to it!
Accompanied by little treats such as a handwritten note and a bookmark, Mr B’s Reading Subscriptions are definitely a fabulous gift for any book lover and I would strongly recommend them for future gifts. I always love supporting independent stores, especially when they provide a service like no other. In short, I cannot wait for my next subscription to arrive.
So what do you think, will you take a look at Mr B’s for your next gift idea?
In the meantime, Happy Reading!
Love, H x
